Love Is Back (Limited)Julian Love returned to practice Wednesday. Ty Okada did not.

Julian Love Is Back on the Practice Field, and the Safety Room Can Exhale a Little

Julian Love practiced Wednesday. Limited, but present, which after a Sunday in Landover without either starting safety felt like a parade. “Julian will be out there today in some capacity,” Mike Macdonald said, per Seahawks.com. “Ty will not practice today.” Ty Okada (hamstring) was the only Seahawk who didn’t practice at all.

Love hurt the calf in practice last week and missed the 33-31 loss to Washington. You saw what that cost. AJ Finley, making his first NFL start, drew a personal foul on a third-down stop with the game tied 24-24, and Washington kicked a field goal. In a two-point loss. I’m not blaming Finley for the whole thing. I am blaming the calf.

The rest of the room is trending the right way. Nick Emmanwori was a full participant and went from nine snaps at Arizona to 36 against Washington, per Fox 13. And Seattle released D’Anthony Bell from the practice squad Wednesday, per Seattle Sports. Teams don’t cut safeties when they’re afraid of running out of safeties.

Nick Emmanwori’s defensive snaps against Washington, up from nine at Arizona.

Limited on Wednesday is not active on Sunday, and calves are famously moody. Thursday and Friday will tell us more. But a Pro Bowl safety back on the grass with the Chargers coming to town is the best thing this week has produced, and I’m choosing to enjoy it before the next report ruins it.

Harbaugh Told Herbert to ‘Be Better.’ His Defense Is Already Fine.

The scary part is the other side of the ball. That same Chargers defense forced five turnovers in Buffalo and still lost. Seattle turned it over three times against Washington, and Seahawks.com’s mailbag counted 21 Commanders points off those giveaways. You can do the math on a 33-31 game without me.

There’s a family subplot, too. Macdonald spent 2021 as Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator at Michigan, per SI, so Sunday is the student hosting the teacher at Lumen. I hope he’s a gracious host. I hope he’s a gracious host who holds on to the football.

Zach Charbonnet might practice today. Macdonald said there’s “a chance that we open it up” Thursday, starting his 21-day PUP window, and that it’s about “roster spots, things like that.” The backfield has lost two fumbles in three games. Start the clock. Heavy

Tory Horton played 15 snaps at Washington and caught all three targets for 48 yards, every one a first down. Michael Bumpus’s advice: “Give him the ball.” Fifteen snaps is a rounding error. Three first downs on three looks is a résumé. Seattle Sports

Grey Zabel turned up on Wednesday’s report with a new groin issue and was limited. This line has already sent two guards to injured reserve. Wrap whatever needs wrapping, Grey. Bubble wrap counts. Seattle Sports

RAMS

Aaron Donald sat out Wednesday’s practice with a sore back, per Sean McVay, as the Rams get ready for Sunday night in Philadelphia trying to climb back to .500. The Rams un-retired him for one more run. Four weeks in, the back has started asking pointed questions about that decision. Nobody here wishes injury on anybody. I’m just noting that coming out of retirement looks harder on the spine than retiring was.

NINERS

Brock Purdy opened the season at 18-1 for MVP, 10th on the board. ESPN’s awards tracker now has him at +425, right behind Josh Allen. Enjoy September, Brock. The last time your team played us in a game that counted, it scored six points, and the rematch is Oct. 11. MVP ballots don’t get filled out until January, which, historically, is when things start going sideways in Santa Clara.

CARDINALS

Jeremiyah Love finally got the job in Santa Clara: 52 snaps to Tyler Allgeier’s 30, 21 carries for 90 yards and a receiving touchdown, per ESPN. His own review: “Left a lot out there.” The third overall pick finally looked like one, and Arizona still lost 36-30. Good for the kid, honestly. Some Cardinals traditions survive any coaching change, and losing by six on the day your rookie breaks out is apparently one of them.

Seattle took this Ferrum College running back in the fourth round of the 1990 draft, 89th overall, and he made three straight Pro Bowls from 1993 to 1995. Who is he?

Chris Warren. He came out of the same draft class as Cortez Kennedy and ran for 6,706 yards and 44 touchdowns in eight seasons in Seattle.

A 22-Point Third Quarter Buries the Colts

Seattle sleepwalked through the first half on Sunday Night Football, then woke up and scored 22 points in the third quarter, including its second defensive touchdown of the night, to blow out Indianapolis 46-18 at home and pull even at 2-2. Nine years later, the lesson still applies: a slow start is only a problem if you never stop having it.
