Help Wanted: Running BacksJoe Mixon and Robert Henry Jr. join a backfield that ran out of bodies

Seattle Went Running Back Shopping and Came Home With Two

Seattle spent Monday restocking the backfield. Joe Mixon worked out in the morning and is set to join the practice squad if he passes his physical, and the Seahawks are also signing undrafted rookie Robert Henry Jr. off Washington’s practice squad, per ESPN. Mike Macdonald explained it with zero spin: “We’re down runners. We need running backs. He’s a good running back.” Honestly, more press conferences should go like that.

Mixon is a two-time Pro Bowler with 7,429 rushing yards and 74 total touchdowns over eight seasons. He also missed all of 2025 with a foot injury, and Houston released him in March, per NFL.com. He’s 30. The practice squad is the right place to find out what’s left. If the legs are there, great. If they aren’t, it cost Seattle one practice squad spot.

7,429

Joe Mixon’s career rushing yards, piled up over eight seasons before he missed all of 2025 with a foot injury.

Henry is the move I like more. He’s coming off another team’s practice squad, so Seattle has to keep him on the 53 for three games, per Yahoo Sports. Washington took our winning streak. We took their running back. Not quite revenge, but I’ll take it.

The reason for the shopping trip: Jadarian Price is on IR, Zach Charbonnet isn’t ready yet, and Jacardia Wright, the only back on the practice squad, has a foot injury. Emanuel Wilson carried it Sunday with 81 yards and a score. Now he has Holani, Velus Jones Jr. and two new guys learning where the cafeteria is. Mixon hasn’t played since 2024. Henry’s only NFL stop so far is Washington’s practice squad. Between them, that’s one complete running back.

Big Cat Should Play Sunday. Charbonnet Has to Wait.

Charbonnet won’t play Sunday. He will get his first team reps this week. “He’s going to get team reps this week, which is really exciting,” Macdonald said, per Seahawks.com. It’s been less than eight months since surgery on the ACL he tore in January’s divisional win over these same 49ers.

So he misses the rematch with the team he got hurt against. That’s the right call, even if it costs us a good storyline. A good storyline doesn’t carry the ball, and right now Seattle needs anybody who does.

Around the Coop

Macdonald said he “thought the run game was effective” against the Chargers and asked running backs coach Thomas Hammock how many yards they’d run for. Hammock’s answer: “Doesn’t matter.” Best quote of the week, and it came from a man who won’t even look at the box score. Seahawks.com

Boakai Hilton, Terrion Arnold’s co-defendant, pleaded guilty Monday and took a deal with a 10-year prison term that includes testifying against Arnold. Arnold is still on paid leave and faces eight felony counts. Cornerback depth beyond Witherspoon and Jobe should plan on him not being available. NBC Sports

RAMS

The Rams beat Philadelphia 24-20, and they had plenty of help. The Eagles went 0-for-12 on third down. Then Nick Sirianni passed on a chip-shot field goal that would have made it 23-10, went for it on fourth down, and didn’t get it. Kyren Williams scored twice in the final four minutes after that. Sean McVay had been 0-4 against Sirianni, so congrats on finally beating him. Turns out all it took was Sirianni giving the game away first.

NINERS

Kyle Juszczyk will miss a few weeks with a knee injury, so the 49ers’ tight end room has to cover the fullback job. Kyle Shanahan also says Nick Bosa won’t be back this week. Seattle is down to one fullback too, which makes Sunday’s fullback battle a fair fight. The 49ers’ whole offense runs through the fullback. Ours just has a new dad.

CARDINALS

Last week Arizona got to be a road favorite and lost by 12. This week FanDuel has the Cardinals as 5.5-point home underdogs to Detroit. That’s three straight losses and one week of being the favorite, and the oddsmakers took the hint fast. The upside of being the underdog in your own building is that nobody can say you blew it.

Seattle traded up to No. 69 overall in the 2015 draft for this Kansas State receiver, who was named first-team All-Pro as a return specialist as a rookie. Who is he?

Tyler Lockett. The return-man label didn’t stick: he spent 10 seasons in Seattle and became one of the most reliable receivers in franchise history.

Galloway Torches Jimmy Johnson’s Dolphins Twice

Dennis Erickson’s Seahawks went to Miami and beat Jimmy Johnson’s Dolphins 22-15, and Joey Galloway accounted for both first-half touchdowns. John Friesz hit him from 65 yards in the first quarter and from 51 in the second. Two catches, 116 yards of touchdowns, and a defense back in South Florida that never figured out the speed.

Got a Question Hammock Would Answer With ‘Doesn’t Matter’?

Send it anyway. Roster panic, cap math, a running back you want signed off somebody’s practice squad: the mailbag takes all of it, and The Rooster answers the best ones in his own unhinged way.
